Book Review: The Search for God and Guinness

October 14th, 2009 by Jeff

Stephen Mansfield comes up with another winner of a book in his latest.

Much like Mansfield, while not being a legalist, I can have my thoughts of beer, and is there value in it and how does it work in a God-honoring, God-hearing, productive way.

Yet that is exactly there story of Arthur Guinness.  Guinness gave his life for his people, whether that is family, employees and the good people of Ireland.

Historically, there is much to beer and how it was pivotal and “needed” by the Pilgrims in coming to America. The beer was often cleaner than water, and as Mansfield says was linked to dealing with 3500 uses for medicine and bringing people to good health.

Mansfield always paints an accurate picture not a rose-colored picture. He gives you all angles to a person’s life.

Guinness’ life had its challenges, including seeing 20 pregnancies with his wife, lead only to 6 adult children. His comparison to other great leaders, such as Churchill has value on what is added to us and in us, and where that can be good and can go astray.

This is a story known by too few, I’m sure.  I’m grateful I now know the story of a great businessman and community leader, that we so desperately need so many more of today.god-and-guinness
